Author, storyteller...persistent writer
I've been writing ever since I learned to make letters at the age of four, at a blackboard my parents set up in the kitchen. I had fifteen minutes of literary fame in the 1990s when Dutton/Penguin/Putnam published one of my books, then lots of hard anonymous slogging since. But I've learned to dig in and keep writing, because as they say, if you sit at the table long enough, eventually the chips (a metaphor here for faithful readers) do come your way.

About my Christmas novelette: Amazon's Number-One Religious Mystery! (for about 15 minutes or so...)
This story was crafted as a kind of Christmas gift to my readers, both new and old, although I must confess, it was originally chapter one of my upcoming book, Names of the Fathers. But I didn't want that to be a holiday-themed book; it's actually a bit more serious than Hard Cider Abbey, not a murder mystery or who-dun-it, but a psychological mystery (why would a mother discard her own child?). I decided, as an experiment, to simply put it out there, and see where the chips fell. It started selling within an hour of being published, and has been moving briskly ever since. Thanks, y'all! If I knew it was going to be a best-seller, I might have priced it higher than 99 cents! But the price will hold for now...Enjoy! And Merry Christmas!
If you're a new visitor to Hard Cider Abbey, I invite you to take a look at the original novel, published in August 2018. On December 6 and 7th, we have a Saint Nicholas Day special (otherwise known as a Kindle Countdown Deal): Just 99 cents Thursday and Friday, $1.99 Saturday and Sunday! The paperback is always available at just $12.99. And stay tuned for the next installment, Names of the Fathers, which will appear in mid-January, with an appropriately wintry theme.
I also write non-fiction. Called to Serve: The Untold Story of Father Irenaeus Herscher OFM was published by the Franciscan Institute in November 2018. (I've had a very busy year!) The official biography of Thomas Merton's "Happy little Franciscan" and archivist, as well as spiritual advisor to many, including yours truly. Available from the Franciscan Institute, franciscanpublications.com (paperback, $24.99) or as an e-book from Nook/Barnes and Noble ($8.49)
Hard Cider Abbey: Book one of the Barefoot Monk Mystery series! A struggling monastery in the mountains of West Virginia, an eclectic collection of cider-brewing monks young and old, and an unexplained murder, of the abbey's august librarian: Who dun it? Publishers Weekly says: "Cecala crafts a quirky mystery with two unlikely sleuths and an exceptionally appealing setting. Readers will be eager for more adventures from the endearing duo." (9/10/18). More adventures to come! Available from Amazon, in e-book ($3.99) or paperback ($12.99); read in Kindle Unlimited for free!
